Jesús Bermejo Tirado, The Roman Peasant

Who built Rome?

In this lecture, Jesús Bermejo Tirado will revisit the Roman world, not its cities, but its villages, from the perspective of the people who worked it. Have historians too often pictured a landscape dominated by great estates, slaves and elites? Drawing on new evidence, Bermejo Tirado will explore debates over the hidden history of the Roman hamlet: Were small farmers gradually displaced by large landowners, or did they remain central to rural life under Roman rule?
